Video: Farmer shows footage of floods engulfing his farm
Matt Barker
A Yorkshire farmer has told how he saw walls, trackways and tonnes of topsoil washed away by flash floods.
Swaledale farmer Matt Barker had just finished sowing a field of forage rape at Abbey Farm, Ellerton Abbey, near Richmond.
His farm was engulfed by flood water after up to 113mm of rain fell in just three hours – devastating the iconic Yorkshire Dales landscape that had been centuries in the making.
Mr Barker, who rears beef, sheep and arable crops, said soil from his fields “ran like a river and ended up a mile away – it was unbelievable.”
