Warning issued over Cydectin
Warning issued over Cydectin
SHEEP producers who have vaccinated their flocks against foot-rot are being warned not to use Cydectin 1% injectable solution.
The caution comes from Cydectins manufacturer, Fort Dodge Animal Health, in a letter published in this weeks Vet Record.
The companys vet adviser, Dan Brown, says adverse reactions have been reported in sheep vaccinated with either of the two foot-rot vaccinations available and subsequently treated with Cydectin 1% injectable solution for sheep.
"Affected flocks suffer from widespread lethargy six to eight hours after injecting Cydectin, with 80% of sheep lying down. A very small percentage of those animals have either died or suffered abortion.
"We do not know the full mechanism of the problem. We have done blood tests and post mortems on affected sheep, and the theory is that it may be an allergic reaction to the carrier in the injectable solution."
He adds that off-label use of Cydectin injectable for cattle can also cause problems in sheep vaccinated against foot-rot. "But Cydectin oral drench is safe to use in vaccinated sheep." Producers seeking more information can call Mr Brown (01489-781711). *
