Up airport control
A KEEN walker from the Lake District has called on the government to tighten foot-and-mouth control measures at airports after he was allowed to re-enter Britain from infected African states without encountering any biosecurity checks.
David Newell, who lives in Kendal and works at Field and Track outdoor shop in Ambleside, said he arrived at Manchester Airport wearing the same boots in which he had trekked through the F&M-infected countries of Namibia and Botswana.
Mr Newell said he was shocked to find no customs officers taking an interest in the boots, which he feared could have been harbouring the disease.
A spokesman for Customs and Excise said: "Last year 89m people passed through Customs and Excise controls. It would be impossible to stop and search them all." *
