Union president lays off farmworker

THE SCOTSMAN reports on this weeks news that Jim Walker, president of the National Farmers Union of Scotland, has made one of his own farm staff redundant.

Mr Walker told a farm union crisis meeting at Lauder that the redundancy was “all what I could do” after poor sales at recent markets and the slump in farming.

The NFUS president has several hundred suckler cows and about 2000 ewes on his farm at Drumbuie, Dumfriesshire.

He said he was lobbying for the Scottish Executive to take action even if this was only to pay to transport surplus ewes to slaughterhouses and carcasses to renderers.

Mr Walker warned the meeting about the poor public relations implications of mass shootings on farms.
