Strict ‘Scotch’ labelling could backfire

SCOTTISH farmers have been warned that plans to allow only cattle born and bred in Scotland to be labelled “Specially Selected Scotch Beef” could backfire.

Robert Forster, chief executive of the National Beef Association, voiced concern that Scottish slaughterhouses would not have enough throughput if the condition was made.

Current arrangements allow animals from England or Wales which are finished for 90 days in Scotland to qualify for the specially selected label.
