Spring introduction for Case CX series

REPLACEMENTS for the familiar Case IH 4200-series tractor range were revealed at the Agritechnica exhibition in Germany.

Planned for UK introduction next spring, the CX series is 95% new, says Case. Perkins-built engines replace the Case IH designs used previously, a newly engineered gearbox gives forward-reverse shuttle with all speed options, and electronic linkage control is said to offer more responsive operation of draft implements.

In addition, using the same cab structure as on the larger Maxxum MX tractor provides improved driver accommodation.

"We have spoken to many 4200-series users and addressed many design issues with the new models," says Denzil Homer of Case. "We think the CX will offer best-in-class performance in many respects, as well as driver comfort."

There are six models in the Doncaster-built range from 50hp to 100hp in 10hp increments. The 2.7-litre three-cylinder and 4-litre four-cylinder power units are quieter than the previous engines, provide more torque and better power characteristics, are more economical and meet forthcoming exhaust emission laws.

Although final UK specifications have still to be announced, gearbox options are likely to include an all-manual 8×8 speed transmission, a 16×8 speed version with gear lever mounted thumb-switch splitter, and a creep option giving 24×12 speeds in all.

Unlike the 4200-series transmission, all CX variants have a mechanical shuttle with matched forward and reverse speeds.

"This is a new gearbox design using stronger castings and a different internal layout," Mr Homer emphasises. "It offers better features and improved shift quality while a new clutch gives smoother take-up of drive."

All models get a simplified electronic control system for the hydraulic lift linkage. In basic form, this provides electric control of lift-lower with mechanical draft sensing. But electronic draft sensing, through a top link load cell, is reckoned to provide greater sensitivity and response when ploughing or using other soil-engaging implements.

Buyers can opt for standard or low-profile cabs, the latter having a slimmer roof (the heater is mounted behind the drivers seat) with a large glass panel.

Production of CX models is due to start early next year at the Case Doncaster plant with supplies building in the UK from mid-April onwards.n

Case IH CX models succeed the 4200-series with substantial improvements to engine performance, transmissions, hydraulics and cab. A spring 98 introduction is planned for the UK.
