Size nines to rescue
SIZE nine boots are the latest weapon growers are being urged to use in the war on blackgrass.
If a size nine boot covers one blackgrass seedling at each footstep across a field that indicates an infestation of 40 plants a sq m, IACR Rothamsted weed specialist Stephen Moss told Du Ponts Autumn Cereal Herbicide Seminar in Cambridge.
Joint Rothamsted/ADAS trials show yield losses can be up to 0.75t/ha (0.3t/acre) if such populations go unchecked through the season. *
