Simbo Lims dispersal pulls em in
GRAHAM Simms decision to end 18 years of Limousin breeding brought enthusiasts to Northwich, Cheshire, for the on-farm sale of the noted Simbo herd.
But the top price of 3500gns came for a cow bred by Messrs Smiths of Bloxham. Ironstone Jasmine is out of Athena, a cow that was sold at Dan Haaks Uplands herd dispersal for 12,000gns, and was offered with a her third calf – an April-born heifer by Preselihill Jupiter. Buyer was PA Earlie, Blandford, Dorset.
Auctioneer David Tomlinson said: "Buyers were prepared to pay good prices for the best females but were very selective." Despite that, bids took three lots to 3000gns including the only bull entry.
Simbo Jester won the junior class at the 1995 Royal Show and took another red ticket at Stoneleigh two years later. He is by the high BLUP ranked bull Haltcliffe Flashman which has an EBV of £61. Jester made 3000gns to Chris Bustance for his Moulton herd at Spalding, Lincs.
Another of Flashmans progeny made 3000gns when an undisclosed buyer from the north-west secured the 1993-bred cow Simbo Impeccable suckling a June-born heifer calf by Broadmeadows Layman.
And it was a daughter of former Royal show champion Oakley Asterix that completed the trio of 3000gns transactions.
Simbo Jesabel is out of a Harvest Rajah dam and had a summer-born Layman bull calf at foot. She was one of several purchases made by Millington Estates, York who have been adding to their herd from others.
Simbo Imp, a 1993-bred cow by Flashman and out of a Fleethill Clan-sired dam also joined Millington Estate. She was suckling a bull calf by Layman and made 2200gns. The same buyers also gave 2100gns for Simbo Gemini. She was sold with a Layman heifer calf and was in-calf to Jupiter.
But it was late in the day when the biggest surprise came with a 2000gns call for the six-month-old bull calf Simbo Pompom. By Jupiter and out of a Flashman cow, his shape and potential caused a stir among the crowd but local breeder Jim Hallam held off the opposition to secure for his Blackwood herd.
Averages: 26 females £1813 and one bull £3100. (Harrison and Hetherington)
