Scottish Milk into processing
SCOTTISH MILK has unveiled the first stage of its move into processing with the re-opening of its Mauchline cheese-packing centre.
The centre, closed in 1997 following an accident, has been revamped at a cost of £750,000. It has storage capacity for 1800 tonnes of cheese.
But Jack Pirie, chief executive of Scottish Milk Products, had little good news for suppliers.
He told The Herald that farmers who have invested heavily on the expectation of higher milk prices could go out of business.
He expected small dairy farmers to pull in their belts still further.
