‘Retailers told porkies over pigmeat’

THE big supermarkets have reneged on promises to support the British pigmeat industry, according to the National Farmers Union of Scotland.

The claim, which is reported in The Herald was made by Andrew Peddie, chairman of the NFUS intensive livestock committee.

Mr Peddie believes the government could help by getting government department to specify British pigmeat.

His views are echoed by David Whiteford, chairman of the Scottish Pig Industry Initiative, who is also quoted in the same paper.

The June census shows the Scottish herd falling to 58,000 sows against 72,000 two years ago.
