Rare Breeds Trust rejects Swona cattle

THE Rare Breeds Survival Trust has refused to accept the 20 cattle on the Isle of Swona, four miles off Orkney, as a true rare breed worthy of special protection.

The cattle have lived wild since being left behind by the last of seven farmers who abandoned the harsh conditions a quarter of a century ago.

They are said to have developed their own breeding pattern.

The trust said it was rejecting the inclusion of the Swona cattle because one of its main rules was that the breed had to be in existence for 75 years.
