THE Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, which did such invaluable work during the foot-and- mouth crisis, was at the Royal Welsh Show trying to talk to as many as possible of the 1000 Welsh farming families still thought to be struggling to survive.
Chairman John Wallis was determined to demonstrate that help was available. This could be one-off assistance with domestic expenses, or guidance to ensure that families are claiming all the state support to which they are entitled.
RABI officials manning the stand admitted that they had been touched by the number of people who arrived to say thanks for help given over the last year.
The National Assemblys agency Education and Learning Wales announced at the event that it has £4.8m to spend on improving the computer and business skills of Welsh farming families, and on enhancing farmers management development expertise.
Courses ranging from basic computer competence to detailed management training could be offered to around 5000 people over the next three years.
NFU deputy president Tim Bennett, Lord Plumb and the Princess Royal will be among the speakers at a top London conference on Sept 12.
The event, organised by the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution and supported by farmers weekly, is entitled A Viable Future for Farming and the Rural Economy.
