PROFITWILLLIFTMORALE

BETTER profitability and a morale boost would certainly be welcome by most dairy producers this autumn.

Low prices, the MMCs Milk Marque report, increasing TB incidence and a general feeling of doom and gloom have made it a tough year for many.

Seeking answers to individual business problems and industry concerns is never easy. But a visit to this months European Dairy Farming Event, at Stoneleigh, Warks, on Sep 22 and 23, could help.

As usual, farmers weekly will be part of the Spotlight on Profit centre. This offers a chance to discuss key issues and new research with specialist speakers, researchers and other producers.

But if its advice for your business you are after, visit the cost clinic – a new Spotlight on Profit initiative in the FW building adjacent to the main marquee. Set up by the Milk Development Council and FW – in conjunction with FWi – the clinic will allow you to discuss your financial position confidentially with a dairy consultant.

But getting maximum benefit from this means being open with consultants: They cannot find weaknesses – or opportunities – within a business without taking a look at one or more years financial results.

Making the most of opportunities could mean expanding cow numbers to improve efficiency, as one farming company director explains in this Update.

Other businesses could benefit from lowering production costs. This Update explores some of the options including reducing silage making and grazing more grass by manipulating grass growth; reducing lameness; and improving cow health through good ventilation.
