PORTUGAL has been asked by the EU Commission to explain an alarming rise in cases of BSE.
The European Union has criticised Portugals implementation of controls to fight the spread of the disease and has given the countrys government until today (Fri) to respond, according to a report in the Financial Times (Sept 22).
EU farm commissioner, Franz Fischler, said he could not exclude the possibility of banning beef exports from Portugal. The commission is also considering legal action. *
