Pig Association hits out at offal charges

By FWi staff

BRITISH Pig Association chairman John Godfrey has hit out at pig abattoirs that are charging farmers for offal disposal.

“The BPA believes that it is wrong that the pig industry should have to bear the cost of disposing of pig offal that does not pose a health threat to man or beast,” Mr Godfrey said.

The changes have been introduced by some abattoirs in recent weeks to offset the loss of Government rendering subsidies.

The NFU wrote to the Office of Fair Trading a fortnight ago to complain about the charges some pig abattoirs were levying for offal disposal. Richard Vidal, from NFUs legal department, told Farmers Weekly magazine this week that the OFT had passed the matter to its own lawyers.
