THREE new herbicides from DuPont could help growers combat this years tricky over-wintering weed problems.
Lexus XPE is aimed at early control of grass and broad-leaved weeds in late sown cereals and crops needing an overspray, says herbicide product manager Martyn Rogers.
Although it contains the same field rate of flupyrsulfuron-methyl as Lexus Class, which is also approved for early season use, adding a near full rate of metsulfuron-methyl (Ally) extends blw control and boosts flupyrsulfuron activity, Mr Rogers explains.
"We saw the same with Oracle, where metsulfuron boosted the activity of IPU and we seem to be getting an extra 5% blackgrass control here."
The result is residual activity, blw control and better early blackgrass control than fop herbicides and better and more consistent weed control than IPU+DFF, he claims. Price will be similar to Lexus Class at £28/ha (£11.33/acre).
For fields needing an early cleavers clean-up DuPont is launching Ally Express, supplying 5g/ha of Ally plus 20g/ha of FMCs fast acting contact blw herbicide carfentrazone.
"We knew our sulfonylurea herbicides were being used with cleavers killers to extend the spectrum of control – Ally Express delivers the same result in a formulated mix," says Mr Rogers.
A cheaper alternative for narrower blw spectrums including cleavers is Platform S. Developed by FMC and marketed by DuPont, it supplies 15g/ha of carfentrazone plus 600g/ha of mecoprop-p.
Cleavers up to 20cm across, speedwells and large volunteer rape and beans are controlled until GS33, says Mr Rogers. Approval for autumn use is expected.
Although aimed at early use, Ally Express and Platform S should not be used with oils and adjuvants, which could limit early tank mixing options, admits Mr Rogers.
