Now Shrewsbury market under threat
By FWi staff
SHREWSBURY livestock market has become the latest live auction to hit hard times.
Turnover at the market fell by almost £60,000 a week in the 12 months to March, according to market manager Graham Williams.
Mr Williams blamed the massive drop in income on the beef export ban and fewer calf and sheep sales.
Total throughput at the market fell by almost 6% on the year to 171,000 head of cattle and sheep.
Banbury market, which closed yesterday, was said to be losing about £16,000 a week before it went under. It was once the largest livestock market in Europe.
