Minette Batters to lead Defra farm profitability review

Minette Batters, former president of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), has been appointed by Defra to lead a comprehensive review of farm profitability.
The review, announced on Monday (7 April) by Defra secretary Steve Reed, will address the financial challenges facing farmers and offer solutions for long-term sustainability and competitiveness in the industry.

Baroness Batters will engage with farmers, growers, and other government departments whose work affects the agricultural sector.
Her focus will be on delivering short-, medium- and long-term recommendations, including actions for both government and the farming industry.
The review will form part of the government’s “new deal for farmers” and will support the broader growth mission outlined in its “plan for change.”
Baroness Batters will be supported by Defra’s newly established profitability unit, which will assist in developing a food strategy, farming roadmap, and the land use framework.
Her work will also build on other reviews, such as the regulatory landscape overhaul led by Dan Corry.
Mr Reed said: “Backing British farmers is the backbone of all work to support rural economic growth and boost Britain’s food security.”
He added: “I am delighted to appoint Baroness Batters, whose leadership during a time of significant change in British agriculture makes her uniquely placed to tackle the deep-rooted problems in the sector and support farmers’ long-term profits.”
Baroness Batters said: “I will leave no stone unturned in trying to find solutions to boost farm profitability.
“There will not be one ‘silver bullet’ to fire, but I’m hopeful this review can make a difference.”
The review, which begins immediately, will last six months, with recommendations expected within this period.
