Judges likes and niggles
Common to all finalists was a milk protein figure above 3.4% said judge Gordon Newman.
Only one finalist used an additive apart from what Mr Newman calls the most effective additive – an extra tractor to roll the clamp.
But he was disappointed that no finalists had incorporated winter rye or Italian ryegrass into their maize growing system.
And most cows were capable of greater production from forage.
• Other judges included last years competition winner Jon Rogers, Ilton Farm, Malborough, Devon and Patrick Tomlinson, Midland Bank.
Gordon Newmans close inspection revealed a high standard of chop and compaction in all clamps.
