Hundreds of pigs perish in East Yorks barn fire

About 400 pigs have been killed after fire swept through a barn on a farm in East Yorkshire.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said the fire broke out shortly after 1pm on Friday 5 July at a farm in Riston Road, Catwick.

All the pigs inside the barn were “fatally injured” and the building was “completely destroyed”.

Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to a neighbouring barn. However, that building did suffer some smoke damage.

Five fire engines and more than a dozen firefighters tackled the blaze for more than five hours.

Four sets of breathing apparatus, a thermal imaging camera and a drone were used.

Early indications are that the origin of the fire is likely to have been an electrical fault.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service has urged farmers to carry out regular electrical safety checks, especially in areas where straw or hay is stored.
