FBTs role doubts
FBTs role doubts
CONCERN that new entrants were receiving few benefits from farm business tenancies was expressed by south-west NFU delegates.
Harry Harris, Dorset, told the tenants surgery that very few FBTs were going to new entrants in the county, with most being taken by large farms, which were driving rents up.
"We are having horrendous tenders for FBTs of £140-200/acre, and naturally landlords arent going to let existing tenants sit on £40-50," he said.
Tenants committee chairman Ian Brown said there should not be this knock-on effect, but inevitably agents working on behalf of landlords were using this argument.
"In a free market individual farmers set the price. It is a matter of making sure that our members know exactly what their legal position is," he added.
