Photos: 6,000 European farmers unite in Brussels protest

About 6,000 farmers from countries across the European Union have descended on Brussels as a show of solidarity over poor returns.

Thousands of angry farmers converged on Brussels today (7 September) in about 2,000 tractors, demanding fairer prices for their produce.

UK farmers rubbed shoulders with mainly French, German and Belgian farmers in a huge convoy. Many farmers had driven very far to take part in the protest.

Farmers set off fireworks, sounded horns and blew whistles in a noisy procession that headed towards the European Commission’s headquarters in Brussels.

The protest has been timed to coincide with an emergency meeting of the EU agriculture council to discuss the ongoing prices crisis.

Dozens of pictures added to the social website Twitter, under the hashtag #farmaction, showed the scale of the demonstration.
