How farmers can help rural hedgehogs – Hedgehog Street free guide
Provided by
Hedgehog Street is a joint campaign from People’s Trust for Endangered Species and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
The 2018 State of Britain’s Hedgehogs report found hedgehog numbers in rural areas have plummeted by half since the millennium.
In response to this worrying decline, the two charities have produced a free guide offering the wider farming community and landowners advice on how they can help hedgehogs and other wildlife thrive once again in our countryside.

The 2018 State of Britain’s Hedgehogs report found hedgehog numbers in rural areas have plummeted by half since the millennium.
The two charities behind this report and the national Hedgehog Street campaign – People’s Trust for Endangered Species and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society – have produced a free guide offering advice for the wider farming community and landowners on how you can help hedgehogs and other wildlife thrive once again in our countryside.
We outline different ways that land can be more hedgehog-friendly, without compromising your day-to-day work, including advice on:
- hedgerow management
- field margins and field sizes
- ploughing regimes
- and the usefulness of scrub areas
We also explain how some Countryside Stewardship schemes can help hedgehogs and other desirable wildlife, and provide instructions on how to survey for hedgehogs on your land.
How you can help
We know there are many of you across the UK already doing fantastic work by farming land in a sensitive manner in a bid to help hedgehogs, but we really need to work with more farmers if we’re going to save our hedgehogs.
To obtain your FREE copy of this guide, please check your this week’s Famers Weekly magazine or contact us at hedgehogs@ptes.org.

Surveying for hedgehogs
If you want to find out if you have hedgehogs on your land, get in touch at hedgehogs@ptes.org and we can send you advice on how to conduct your own hedgehog survey.
The first 50 farmers who contact us will receive a FREE mammal footprint tunnel (RRP £16 each).
Alternatively, you can buy your own mammal footprint tunnels online.
Hedgehogs leave very distinct footprints and these tunnels can easily be used to determine if they’re present at your site (no species licence is required).
