Farmers warned to protect fuel tanks as diesel thefts soar
Farmers are being urged to secure their farmyards and fortify their fuel storage after diesel thefts more than doubled throughout 2022.
Rural insurer NFU Mutual has warned that, as the cost-of-living crisis continues and fuel prices remain inflated, farmers are becoming increasingly vulnerable to thefts.

NFU Mutual rural affairs specialist Hannah Binns said: “With diesel costing about £1.75/litre at the pumps, farmers’ fuel tanks are now like liquid gold to thieves.
“Farmers need fuel to keep the nation fed, so these thefts are a major concern for agriculture at a time when fast-rising input costs are adding further pressures on rural businesses.
“As well as the loss of vital fuel, thieves often damage tanks, leaving fuel running into the ground, where it can cause horrendous pollution as well as an increased fire risk.”
Record cost
The total cost of diesel thefts in 2022 rose to a record-breaking £886,197, representing a 145% increase compared with the previous year.
Records show that September was the costliest month, with insurance claims amounting to £229,537, compared with £36,237 in 2021.
How to reduce the chances of fuel theft
- Site fuel tanks where they can be seen from the farmhouse
- Fit a fuel tank alarm to be notified of a sudden drop in levels
- Prevent pollution by ensuring the tank is bunded
- Install security lighting and, if possible, CCTV cameras
- Use locking filler caps for vehicles and keep machinery locked away out of sight
- Consider activating intruder and perimeter alarms
- Lock farm gates and block exits that are not in use
- Regularly check tank levels, making a note of the date and time
