Farm shop worker clings to bonnet of car driven by shoplifter

A dramatic CCTV video has emerged showing a farm shop worker clinging to the bonnet of a car after confronting a shoplifter.

The shocking event unfolded at Mainsgill Farmshop near Richmond, North Yorkshire, on 23 November when the suspect tried to flee with stolen goods, endangering the employee’s life in the process.

The driver, 58-year-old Alan Lewis, of Silvertree Walk, Goole, attempted to flee with stolen items, driving his black Vauxhall Corsa directly at the employee.

The footage, viewed over 1.3 million times on social media, shows the vehicle speeding onto the A66 with the staff member still on the bonnet.

The worker eventually climbed off and was unharmed but left “shaken up”, according to the farm shop.

Mr Lewis was arrested and has pleaded guilty to shoplifting, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified and uninsured.

He appeared at York Magistrates Court on 25 November and has been remanded in custody to appear at York Crown Court for on 17 December.

North Yorkshire Police have confirmed the charges and pledged to keep the public updated on the case.
