Cloning ends ‘for financial reasons’

By FWi staff

SCIENTISTS who cloned Dolly the sheep have insisted financial not health factors are behind a decision to end a project on cloning pigs for human organs.

It had been reported that Roslin Institute research stopped because of the risk of deadly viruses jumping from the animals to people.

But the Institute strongly denied this and said research was being refocused for commercial reasons, reports the Financial Times.

Shares of Roslin spin-off company PPL which has its own animal organ transplant programme, closed 14p down at 151p.

PPL said it was still committed to its programme.
