Calf aid scheme extended

THE governments Calf Processing Aid Scheme (CPAS) has been extended to the end of July.

The scheme provides £56 per head for the slaughter of young bull calves which might otherwise have gone into the meat production chain in the oversupplied European market.

Under CPAS nearly 1.5 million have been slaughtered in the UK.

Lord Sewel was adamant there would be no extension past 31 July.
