‘Below average yields in Suffolk’

JACK WEBBER, who farms at Great Welnetham near Bury St Edmunds, has had below average wheat yields.

His first wheat Claire yielded 9.3t/ha (3.75t/acre). “It was one of the best fields on the farm.” But he says yields are below average, estimating the final average to be 8.2t/ha (3.3t/acre), which is below last years average of 9.4t/ha (3.8t/acre).

“Some of the second wheat will average 2.5-3t/acre (6.2-7.4t/ha).” They grow 280ha (700 acres) of wheat.

Malacca yielded 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), which was disappointing. He comments that Savannah was a poor second wheat, but that Aardvark was good..

Espace Peas yielded5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre), “but they looked to do more.” Soil on the farm is medium to heavy.
