Beef labelling scheme ‘biased’ against some Scottish farmers

A NEW European beef labelling scheme to be introduced in July is biased against some Scottish farmers, Dumfries MP Russell Brown, warned.

He said the scheme would prevent butchers and farmers living near the Border who use abattoirs in England from labelling cattle, born and bred in Scotland, as Scotch or Scottish beef.

He called for an exemption for such farmers because “cattle are slaughtered and dressed in the same strict way in Carlisle as they are in Lockerbie”.
