FINISHED CATTLE: Wholesalers continue to moan about a lack of shop demand and farmers remain disappointed with the low level of returns, said auctioneers McCartneys at Ludlow, Shropshire, after Mondays auction. Well-fleshed, lean cattle were at a marked premium, especially if they were not too big or small. FABBL accreditation remains important. Overall, light, medium and heavy steers averaged 80.4p, 87.4p and 87.5p/kg respectively.
LAMBS: Last weeks Easter lamb show at Northampton attracted the markets biggest ever entry. Of the 570 penned, nearly a third were forward for judging. Top price of the day – and collecting £100 prize money from the Suffolk Sheep Society – went to a pen from M J Pinny, Holcot. At 39kgs, they made £65 apiece, according to Northamptonshire Auctions.
