Sign of things to come? British Sugar seems set to make sugar beet a year-round crop. Here Madison, sown Apr 13 last year is lifted on Feb 18 on Robert Wilsons Baylham Hall Farm, Ipswich, while a small trial area of Latoya is drilled early to put its bolting resistance to the test. All 4.5ha harvested was delivered as C quota, with no rejections, to Bury St Edmunds factory on Feb 21. "Id like to know whether thats a record or whether other crops were in the ground longer," says Mr Wilson.
