Linconshire-based engineer James Richardson has come up with a new tool that promises to help beat blackgrass.

The Vulcan is designed to help create good stale seed-beds and uses a set of light spring tines mounted on a set of fully contouring Cambridge rolls.

Disturbing the soil to a depth of 20mm and consolidating it with the rolls provides the ideal conditions for blackgrass to chit, says Mr Richardson. The harrowing action is also said to help batter slugs.

It can also be used as a conventional set of Cambridge rolls by taking off the spring tines. A micro granule applicator can also be added for spreading slug pellets, Avadex or small seeds.

The 10m version costs £35,000.
