A Yorkshire grower who travelled hundreds of miles to help flood-hit farmers in Somerset said he was greeted with scenes that looked like they were from another planet.

Jono Dixon, who farms at Sunk Island, east of Hull, made a round trip of more than 550 miles at his own expense to help coordinate emergency deliveries of animal feed, forage and bedding for livestock producers on the Somerset Levels.

During his two days in Somerset, Mr Dixon also travelled more than a mile by boat through 10ft deep flood water to help salvage a combine harvester belonging to beef and arable farmer James Winslade at Newhouse Farm, Moorland.

“It’s like another planet with modern farm machinery on it,” said Mr Dixon. “It’s outer space with water and all this gear sitting in goodness knows how many feet.”

The mercy mission came after members of the Club Hectare group, which Mr Dixon co-founded, raised £600 for those affected by the floods. Donations were made by more that 70 guests who attended the annual Club Hectare dinner at Louth, Lincolnshire.
