Smyth builds massive four-axle grain trailer
Irish trailer maker Smyth has built its first-ever four-axle trailer.
The monster custom fabrication was ordered by a Danish customer looking for high-capacity grain haulage for less cash than a chaser bin.
It is based on the firm’s Fieldmaster range, but the body has been slimmed by almost 130mm to 2.54m and the length extended by 9m for a total capacity of 35cu m.
Four high-speed commercial axles are fitted with 420x180mm brake shoes and passive steering at either end to reduce tyre scrubbing. They can also be locked straight for awkward reversing manoeuvres and come fitted with 600/55 R22.5 tyres.

Appealing spec details include a sprung drawbar, hydraulic tailgate and oil-activated jack that improves ground clearance over a standard drawbar-mounted set-up.
Two high-capacity rams do the tipping and fit on a 250x150mm box section steel chassis. There’s also a beefed-up suspension system to handle the extra weight and a centralised greasing system to speed up servicing jobs. LED lights come as standard, too.
Asking price is €37,000 (£31,600).
