Valtra has refreshed its diddy A-series tractors, with a smattering of new transmission and technology options added for those in search of a no-frills machine.

The outgoing A4 models were popular with livestock farmers and more than half left the factory with a loader fitted, so Valtra says a lot of the A5 upgrades have been designed with loaders in mind. These include the introduction of powershift gears and an updated control armrest for the stripped-down GL units that has been pinched from posher Hitech4 tractors.

There is little change at the heart of the Finnish-made A-series, with seven models featuring broadly similar power outputs and engine options. The three bottom machines come with the three-cylinder 3.3-litre Agco engine, while the top four get a bigger 4.4-litre four-bore block and a 5hp power increase.

Wheelbases still split the range into three segments, with the smallest trio of tractors getting a 2,250mm chassis. The middle two sit on a slightly bigger 2,430mm rig, while the brace at the top are 2,500mm – a whisker away from the recently launched G-series, with which the A5 models still share many similarities.

The basic GL 12×12 synchromesh box is available on all tractors and is still the only option on the bigger A125 and A135 units. The two-step powershift Hitech2 box, featuring a 24×24 setup, is now offered on all of the three-cylinder machines.

Elsewhere, the two mid-range tractors get three gearbox options – the 12×12, 16×16 Hitech4 and the option of a 32×32 creeper box capable of a snail-rivalling 100m/hour.

Both engines meet Stage 5 emissions targets using a diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction, while service intervals now stand at 600 hours. Prices for the A105 Hitech4 model start at £59,362.
