Bobcat cuts fuel use on new S630 and S650 skid-steers
Upgrades to make the four-cylinder engine in Bobcat’s S630 and S650 skid-steer loaders cleaner and greener have yielded improved fuel consumption.
A particulate filter is part of the Stage 5 package and, together with a new “auto idle” feature, the two have helped trim diesel use and noise.
Other perks to have resulted from tweaks to the 2.4-litre D24 block include an extended oil service interval of 500 hours and improved fuel filtration that demands less frequent filter replacements.

Engine output is a maximum of 73hp and 284Nm on both models, but they differ in lift capacity; the S630 is good for a 2,023kg maximum tipping load, whereas the bigger version will manage 2,455kg.
Operating weights are 3,553kg and 3,778kg, respectively.
Their hydraulic pumps are identical 87 litres/min units – or 116 litres/min with the high-flow option – but the top speed of the two-range hydrostatic transmission is marginally higher in the smaller model, at 19kph.
Both come with bi-directional 12×16.5 tyres as standard, which puts the cab roof at just over 2m high.
Base models are fitted with a new “deluxe” control panel with telematics, keyless start, and the ability to lock certain features such as the high-flow hydraulics or second speed range.
Opting for joysticks rather than regular levers in the cab brings in the “auto idle” feature.
This drops the engine revs when the joysticks are in their neutral position and remain unused for about 5sec.
Starting prices are £43,150 for the S630 and £46,200 for the S650. Opting for the fanciest spec bumps these figures up by about £5,000.
