Skoda has launched its first large seven-seat SUV that promises plenty of space at an affordable price.

Two diesel and three petrol engines offer capacities from 1.4-2.0 litres and power outputs range from 125-190hp.

As a starting point, the 2.0 TDI entry-level model generates 150hp and 340Nm, and will manage 56.5mpg.

The top-of-the-range version delivers 190hp, 400Nm and will get from 0-62mph in 8.6sec.

In the transmission department there’s a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or DSG auto-gearbox with six or seven speeds.

The centrepiece of the four-wheel drive system is an electronically controlled multiplate clutch.

The control unit constantly calculates the ideal driving torque for the rear axle and, when in over-run or at low load, puts power to the front axle to save fuel.

Skoda claims the Kodiaq can come as highly specced as a Range Rover.

Orders can be taken now for the new 4×4 and deliveries are expected during January 2017, with prices for the base model in the order of £25,000 and range-toppers about £10,000 more.
