ATV quads are getting more sophisticated judging by three new models from Honda, which feature a dual-clutch transmission in manual and automatic forms, and independent rear suspension (IRS), resulting in improved towing and load-carrying performance.

The Honda Foreman TRX500 newcomers build upon enhancements introduced early last year by using the same new frame with its increased torsional rigidity helping comfort, ride quality and handling.

Adding IRS further improves those characteristics, says Honda, contributing towards a 55% increase in towing capacity and a 44% rise in payload, as well as higher load rack capacities front (45kg) and rear (85kg).

Increased suspension travel, adjustable for load and conditions, is another benefit.

While the TRX500 FM5 comes with a manual dual-range gearbox, the FA5 and FA6 (with power steering) versions have a manual shifting mode and “intelligent” auto-shifting that responds to the way the quad is being ridden, and with dual-clutch technology providing snappy shifts with reduced power loss.

Consequent fuel efficiency gains can be as much as 12.5% over the models replaced.
