Sauerburger Condor triple-deck rotary cutters land on UK soil

The design and specification of a trio of heavy-duty, triple-deck rotary cutters from German manufacturer Sauerburger has been influenced by importer Simon Richard to meet user requirements in Britain.

“We used to import Woods Batwing mowers for large-area grass mowing and for dealing with stubble and other crop residues before the US company withdrew from the European market,” says Simon.

“I really wanted something similar and Sauerburger was very receptive, so together we came up with a specification that reflects the Woods machines’ features and heavy-duty build.”

The Condor is now available in three widths: 5m, 6.2m and 7.3m.

All have the same 2.5m-wide centre section – but with wings of different dimensions – and a power input rating of 300hp, with two-disc slip clutches protecting the driveline.

Over-centre 100deg wing folding is designed to maintain stability for transport on the generously sized 10.00/75-15.3 tyres – for low rolling resistance – available in tractor-grip or rounded implement tread patterns.

There are six or eight wheels on the 5m and 6.3m models, and eight as standard on the 7.3m version.

The hydraulic linkage connection to the drawbar ensures level cutting height adjustment. This is set using shims on the lift/lower hydraulic cylinders.

Deep deck

“Among the features we wanted is a relatively deep deck at 33cm, which allows long material to bounce back into the path of the cutting blades, and a smooth top surface to the hood to minimise build-up of material that can pose a fire risk,” says Simon.

“Besides, having the framework on the underside enhances the mulching effect because material thrown up by the high-lift blades hits the structure and falls back down for a second whack from the blades.”

Two swinging lift blades a rotor is the standard setup.

As an option, these can be paired with a shredding kit for long stubble comprising a pair of straight blades and counter knives on the hood.

Three- and six-blade fine mulch versions are also available to suit different requirements.

All swinging blades are secured by a quick-release pin and locking tab assembly.

The deck is constructed from 5mm steel plate and two rows of heavy safety chain curtain front and rear prevent flying objects from being propelled very far.

List prices amount to £36,300 for the Condor 5000, and £40,500 for the 6.2m model. The Condor 7300 is listed at £47,400. The three-blade rotor and shredding kit option adds £1,200.
