Fendt hopes revamped Vario will entice UK farmers

Sub-150hp tractors aren’t a big seller for Fendt in the UK, but the Bavarian maker hopes to reel in a few more punters with its revamped 300-series Vario.

The most notable change from the old model is the decision to switch from Deutz-power to AGCO’s own four-cylinder Sisu block.

Previously, the only Fendt models that could accommodate the in-house engine were the baby 200 models. But by redesigning the 300’s chassis it’s been able to slot it in.

The new 4.4-litre block has been tuned to churn out 110hp in the entry-level 310 going up to 138hp in the range-topping 313. There will also be two other mid-range models called the 311 and 312. All will be fitted with a diesel oxidation catalyst, exhaust gas recirculation and an Adblue tank to keep the emissions nasties at bay.

Despite engine change Fendt says that there are no plans to shoehorn the Sisu block into bigger models. This is partly due to the fact the six-cylinder Deutz is more frugal, but it’s also smaller. The equivalent Sisu is too tall and wide to fit in the current chassis and would require a significant redesign.

The home market would probably put up a bit of a fight, too.

Other upgrades for the chunky 300 include a new cab that’s similar to the ones fitted on the 500- and 700-series. This has a front screen that extends into the roof for a better look at a front loader. The right B-pillar has also been ditched on the right-hand side in favour of a large one-piece door.

Higher-spec Profi models will be fitted with the same joystick as its bigger siblings and will have a 7in touchscreen. Those on a tighter budget have the option of a Power spec model without as many bells and whistles.

A lot of 300s will be fitted with a loader so Fendt has come up with a new frame design that means you done need lots of extra brackets before you can fit one.

They’ve also been given a longer wheelbase, which means they can run on tyres as large as 600/65 R38 – roughly the same size as the front rubber fitted on the 1000-series.

The revamped 300 models should start appearing on farms in spring 2015.

700 Vario

Not wanting to be left out, Fendt’s best selling 700-series has had a bit of fettling, too.

The main change has been a switch to a cleaner-burning engine to meet the latest round of emissions regulations. But it’s had a few other updates, too.

An extra 1,000E pto setting has been added, upping the total to four speeds and it’s been given a full dual-circuit braking system.

The cab has also had some attention. The Varioterminal screen has been updated and given the same touch screen technology and smartphones and tablets.

It’s also got LED lights all round and a fancy new windscreen wiper that can clean the whole screen in one swipe.

The upgraded 700 Vario models will be available in November 2014.
