Inventions Competition 2025: David Powell’s novel Spring Bak Gate

Worcestershire farmer David Powell returned to this year’s competition with another novelty – the Spring Bak Gate.
It is designed to be temporarily erected in a field entrance when machinery is frequently coming and going, saving the tedium of constantly opening and closing the gate to prevent livestock escaping.

As the name suggests, it uses a return-to-centre hinge assembly that brings the bar back to its shut position once the vehicle has nudged it open and passed through.
According to David, it can be set up in just five minutes and left in place until the job is complete, at which point it can be packed away and the permanent gate closed.
It works in both directions, is width adjustable, and can be rigged up with dangling wire tails powered by a solar fencer to deter livestock from attempting a bolt for freedom.
