Inventions Comp 2025: Richard Darling’s 6m low-disturbance drill

Richard Darling won third place in our complex category.

With wet weather proving to be kryptonite for Green End Farm’s Horsch Sprinter, he decided to build an insurance policy.

Previous back-up had been a second-hand 6m Kverneland TS, but its rear hopper was putting too much weight on the back of the tractor.

So, instead, he invested in a front tank from Weaving, which feeds distributors mounted in the centre of his home-built 6m drill.

The frame is hung off a chunky headstock from a Grimme bedformer, with depth wheels added to the front and five rows of low-disturbance Metcalfe legs spread behind.

These are spaced at 158mm to suit the framework and, at just 12mm wide, cut a narrow slot that doesn’t take much filling.

This job is completed by a double following harrow, which is mounted on turnbuckles that allow their angle of attack to be altered to suit the conditions – swept back in high trash, nearer vertical to produce a smoother, raked finish.

Total build cost was £30,000, two-thirds of which went on the hopper.
