Newcastle-based engineer Mike Coxen has come up with an ultra-tough wheel security device that can be fitted in seconds, claiming the runner-up title in this year’s Inventions Competition.

The secret to this speedy connection time is a pair of expanding collects that slide over specially designed wheel nuts and lock securely in place.

A key is then used to expand them so the contraption can be removed.

To prevent thieves driving off, it has an 800mm-long length of box-section steel, with a second piece inside for added reinforcement.

Together, these give a 7mm wall thickness, making it a serious challenge to cut through.

As an added party trick, the inner section can be fitted with a cable that allows it to be used for winching the vehicle if it gets stuck.

The strength of the device has been professionally tested and it withstood a force of 4.7t with no damage caused to the components.

He calls it the Klunk and he’s hoping to find someone that will help him bring it to market.
