Milwaukee drill and driver get smaller heads and more power

The latest generations of Milwaukee’s compact hammer drill and impact driver have been slimmed down, allowing them to be operated in tighter gaps than before.

The pro-spec M18 Fuel FPD3 drill is lighter than its predecessor (2.2kg with an M18 B5 lithium-ion battery) and now measures just 175mm in length.

However, the brushless motor still serves up a healthy 158Nm of torque through its 13mm metal chuck.

It will cut a bore of up to 16mm in masonry or steel and offers two speed settings – one that runs to 500rpm and a second that spins at 2,100rpm.

Standard features include a brighter LED light, a metal belt clip and the firm’s Autostop mode that reduces kickback should the cutting head bind with the workpiece.

Meanwhile, the diddy FID3 impact driver has a head length of 113mm and weighs a paltry 1.7kg with the M18 battery attached.

It has more poke than before, at 226Nm, and drive speed is up from 3,900rpm to 4,400rpm.

However, this can be reduced by selecting the slowest of four speed and torque settings via the “drive control” system, which limits impact rates to 1,400/min for precise work.

It comes with a 1/4in hex chuck, will handle any bolt up to an M16, and has a new triple light cluster around the head that eliminates shadows when working.

Both drill and driver are available with Milwaukee’s free-of-charge One Key system, allowing owners to view details of their equipment on a mobile app.

This also includes a built-in GPS tracker that will ping its location whenever it’s in the vicinity of another One Key-enabled tool – of which there are an estimated 250,000 in the UK – even if the battery has been removed.

It’s possible to set up a geofence too, so the owner will get an alert should the tool leave a predetermined perimeter.

Prices for the drill and driver vary, but each is likely to cost about £300 in kit form with two 5Ah batteries and a charger.

Milwaukee has also launched a new cordless band file.

It’s available with a 10cm or 13cm-long nose than can be swivelled through 360deg, has two speed settings plus forward and reverse, and runs on a 12V battery.

This costs £220 when ordered with two batteries and a charger.
