Those serious about their in-field sustenance might like the look of Makita’s new CW002G cooler and warming box, which offers 50 litres of temperature-controlled storage.

Power comes from either the firm’s 18V LXT or 40V XGT battery packs – two of which can be loaded at once – plus there is the option of connecting it to 12V, 24V or 240V supplies.

Users are presented with 14 settings, from a Cornetto-friendly -18C to a cosy 60C for warming pies and pasties.

Temperatures can be monitored and adjusted using a set of buttons and an LCD display on the top of the box.

When loaded with two 5Ah 40V XGT batteries, run times of up to 10 hours are possible at -18C, going up to 24 hours when set to a typical household fridge temperature of 5C.

Running it as a warming box takes a bigger toll on the battery packs, with six hours of heat provided when running at 60C.

Generous internal proportions of 867x465x476mm (LxWxH) mean there is room for plenty of drinks or snacks, and it is tall enough to accommodate a standing two-litre milk carton.

Added features include IP44 waterproofing, a drain plug so that it can be easily rinsed out, a towing handle and a pair of 100mm wheels. There is even a built-in bottle opener.

This sort of convenience doesn’t come cheap, with the bare unit, excluding batteries and a charger, priced from about £1,175 online. However, smaller versions are available for a considerably lower outlay.
