DeLaval self-driving OptiWagon added to auto-feeding system

A self-guided forage dispenser is the latest option for DeLaval’s labour-saving Optimat automatic feed-preparation system, designed for up to 1,000 cattle and used mainly for dairy herds.

The OptiWagon can operate in one or more sheds along pre-determined routes as an alternative to the current overhead rail-mounted dispensers.

Additional routes can be added to upgrade an initial installation as the machine is guided by sensors detecting an induction line and “command” transponders embedded in the yard and building floor.

At the heart of the broader Optimat system is a static multi-ingredient ration mixer, with capacities of 8-12cu m using a single vertical screw, or 16-22cu m as a double screw design.

The mixer is filled with silage and other fibrous material either manually for each batch using a tractor or dedicated loader, or by automatically operated conveyor-bed bunkers, in which case replenishing the bunkers periodically is the only labour involved.

Hoppers dispensing minerals and other dry ingredients can also be included in the system, and DeLaval says accurate weighing ensures a precise ration.

Mobile dispenser

Once mixing is complete, the ration is automatically transferred to the mobile dispensing vehicle, which in the case of the OptiWagon can follow up to 12 routes to deliver its load to different batches of cattle.

The vehicle itself has a chain and slat floor conveyor, two horizontal shredding rotors and a two-way cross-conveyor belt.

It also has a flexible feed pushing “skirt” with swing-out wings, which moves any uneaten fodder up to the feed barrier.

An obstacle detection system designed to prevent collisions with machinery and people has auto restart once the obstacle is clear.

The battery-electric ground drive is powerful enough to cope with up to 8% inclines, and the vehicle self-docks to recharge a depleted battery.

DeLaval engineers reckon the machine can work in all weather conditions, and its ability to turn 360deg within its own length means there is no need for wasteful turning space in dead-end feed passages.
