Garford Flexi Hood sprayer offers 90mm inter-row weed control

A novel flexible sprayer hood from Garford allows chemical to be applied safely in bands as narrow as 90mm.

Initially developed for tree growers looking to control weeds between closely spaced rows of saplings, it uses adjustable fabric membranes with metal side shields that expand or contract to suit the job in hand.

These side shields float independently, working to the contours of the ground, while the fabric flexes to ensure the best possible seal.

To help them keep their shape, the hoods are supported by a wire skeleton.

Garford says the Flexi Hoods offer far greater flexibility than fixed plastic alternatives, allowing inter-row spraying to take place in a wide range of crops such as roots, fresh produce, salads, herbs and bulbs.

Crop clearance is 100mm at 200mm row centres in a 200mm tall crop, and they are suitable for use in both raised and flat beds.

Electric weeding is also coming to the Garford stable after the firm signed a deal with Warwickshire specialist RootWave.

Together, the manufacturers plan to co-develop new products, with electrical weeding systems being integrated into precision guided toolbars.

RootWave’s system uses electricity to boil weeds and their roots, meaning no chemicals are required and soil doesn’t need to be disturbed.
