Cereals 2024: Zone tine drill offers adaptable seeding to suit conditions
Packing five rows of interchangeable seeding elements, the Zone direct tine drill from Bramleys Seed Establishment can be quickly adapted to suit different conditions.
In its simplest form, the toolbar-style drill is fitted with a set of JJ Metcalfe direct drill tine coulters staggered over the first four rows – or “zones” in the Yorkshire firm’s parlance – with a heavy-duty tine following harrow at the rear.
This setup leaves plenty of space between the legs for trash flow and allows it to work well in sticky conditions.

Starting from the front, the first adaptation is the ability to fit a row of straight discs for cutting through trash and slicing the surface ready for the legs to pass through.
These are hydraulically adjustable, allowing working depth to be altered using shims on the rams, and enabling them to be lifted clear of the ground.
The middle two rows are always home to the seeding tines but, at the rear, there’s the option of removing the standard depth wheels and fitting a full-width tyre packer.
Standard row spacing is 125mm and there’s a simple pin-and-hole system for depth adjustment.
Three versions are available – 3m and 4m rigid and 6m hydraulic folding – with prices for the latter starting at £32,000. Opting for front discs and a rear packer adds £6,000 apiece.
Buyers have the option of buying the firm’s own front hopper for £18,500 or using one from another manufacturer.
