Cereals 2010: JCB revamps 3000-series Fastracs

JCB has radically revamped its 3000-series Fastracs.

Two models – the 195hp 3200 and 220hp 3230 – replace the existing high-speed tractors of the same designation but gain the “Xtra” tag and a whole host of new features.

Most significantly the new machines get the same 24F x 9R semi-powershift transmission as used in the company’s 7000-series Fastracs.

Six powershift steps plus four powered range changes mean it is possible to shift clutchlessly right up through all 24 gears. The gearbox can be set to shift automatically and, alongside car-type cruise-control, provides a novel function that means the tractor can be driven with just the brake pedal.

Dubbed “Xtra-Drive”, it allows the operator to drive the tractor in the same way as an automatic car, without the need for the clutch.

The new transmission has also allowed JCB to make the most of the six cylinder Cummins engine’s lugging characteristics. Previous models were limited by the torque rating of the truck-type six-speed manual box used previously. The new transmission means it has been possible to up torque output by 22%, according to the firm.

In addition to this, the two tractors have a selectable transport power boost function that allows the driver to choose between “power” and “economy” modes. In the top two gears the 3200 will boost to 230hp while the 3230 reaches 270hp.

On the hydraulic side of things, the new machines gain a 30% output boost, moving from a 104-litres/min fixed displacement system to a 132-litres/min load-sensing setup.

The 3000s also gain the 7000-series armrest, touch-screen tractor controller and joystick controls. This has enabled JCB to integrate a full headland turn system, automating linkage, hydraulics, pto, engine speed and gear selection.

Going into full production in the next few months, the 3200 and 3230 “Xtra” command a £6000 premium over their predecessors.
