Case replaces its smallest tractors

65hp, 77hp and 97hp Case IH Quantum tractors gain a greener 4-cyl power-plant claimed to use 4% less fuel than before.

Case IH has revamped its smallest tractor range.

Replacing previous JXC models, new Quantum C65, C75 and C95-tagged tractors weigh in at 65hp, 77hp and 97hp respectively. “C” designation indicates the tractor’s compact shape and low overall cab height – it stands at just 2.3m (7.5ft).

Driven – somewhat predictably – by increasingly strict emissions rules, the new models carry an upgraded four-cylinder power-plant claimed to be 4% less thirsty than the outgoing three-pot equivalents.

To achieve these leaner, greener credentials, a bigger turbocharger is fitted along with an air-to-air intercooler and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. However, Case has resisted the temptation to add electronically-controlled common-rail fuel injection, sticking with a conventional, mechanically-governed diesel pump.

On the transmission front there have also been developments. The four-range, four-speed mechanical box with clutchless splitter and power-shuttle is retained from before, but buyers can now spec it up to include a “Powerclutch”. Borrowed from larger JXU tractors, this allows the operator to make gear changes without the clutch pedal, simply by squeezing a de-clutch button on the main gear lever.

The back end’s overall construction has been beefed up and Quantum models can lift 2.6t on the linkage.

Up in the cab there have been a few tweaks to the control set-up, with improved displays and a new diagnostic system for quicker and easier fault-finding.

Prices for the Case Quantum – built in a plant shared with New Holland at Jesi in Italy – are yet to be finalised.
